What are the different types of pillows?

There are many different kinds of pillow, so you can always find something to suit your requirements.  Pillows mainly differ in their fillings and their firmness.

Fillings

The right fillings can completely transform your sleep experience.  We’ve included some of the better known fillings below.

Duck or goose down – feather and down pillows are soft and light, providing a blissfully comfortable night’s sleep.  Goose down comes in various grades but is generally softer, while duck down is the more cost effective option of the two.

Polyester fill and synthetic down – these are a lower cost alternative to natural down and are generally medium to soft in firmness.  These pillows will need to be replaced more frequently than other pillows as they tend to flatten over time.

Memory foam – memory foam is a material which moulds itself to the shape of your shoulders, head and neck and distributes your weight more evenly.  This relieves pressure on certain points in the body, preventing pain in your neck and shoulders.  Although memory foam pillows retain heat (something to be mindful of if you are a warm sleeper) please note that high quality pillows of this type tend to include built-in ventilation to reduce this effect.  As an added bonus, memory foam pillows are often hypoallergenic, perfect for anyone with allergies.

Latex – perfectly comfy and firmer than down, latex pillows hold their shape and are resistant to dust mites as well as mould.  Latex pillows can also be contoured to offer additional head and neck support or to restrict sleep movement for restless sleepers.

Wool – wool is an excellent material for regulating body temperature and wicking away moisture.  This means that it will keep you cooler in summer time and warmer in winter, making it a good choice for people more sensitive to temperature.  Wool pillows are firm and tend to have a long life.  As such, you will get more wear out of them.  In addition to this, they are resistant to mould and dust mites and are naturally hypoallergenic.

Alpaca – alpaca pillows resemble wool pillows and also have hypoallergenic properties.  The key difference between wool and alpaca wool is that alpaca wool is softer than wool.

Cotton – often firm and flat, cotton is another naturally hypoallergenic option with resistance to dust mites and mould.  Like wool, it’s great for wicking away moisture and good at regulating your body temperature.  People with allergies and chemical sensitivities are likely to benefit from cotton pillows.

Firmness

Various levels of firmness are available for purchase, including soft, medium and firm comfort grades, as well as medium-firm and medium-soft.  These levels of firmness offer unique benefits and can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the position you like to sleep in.

What are the different pillow brands?

Lee Longlands sell various brands including Vispring and TEMPUR.

  • Vispring – Vispring boast an outstanding pillow collection which includes fillings of European duck feather and down, Pyrenean duck feather and down and Hungarian goose duck feather and down.  High thread count Jacquard cotton is used for the covers.  This produces a lavish, luxurious and highly comfortable feel.
  • TEMPUR – TEMPUR pillows are made from either memory foam or micro cushions.  Much like their mattresses, their pillows are designed with support in mind.  As well as standard size options, various types of travel pillow are available for comfort away from home.  Meanwhile, universal pillows provide support whenever it is needed, and are often placed under the knees, ankles, arms, lumber region or neck to maximise comfort and alleviate pressure.  Many items in our TEMPUR pillow collection come with a 3 year guarantee for perfect peace of mind, and are washable and quick drying for extended and hygienic use.  Being memory foam, they are also often hypoallergenic, making them an excellent choice for those with allergies.  TEMPUR products available at Lee Longlands include the TEMPUR Original Queen Pillow, the TEMPUR Comfort Pillow (also known as the TEMPUR Original Pillow), the TEMPUR Cloud Pillow, the TEMPUR Travel Pillow and the TEMPUR Universal Pillow.

What should you consider when choosing your pillow?

When working out which product is best for you, you will need to think about the following factors:

  • The position you tend to sleep in
  • Whether you have allergies
  • The tension of your mattress

What position do you sleep in?

Your sleeping position matters a lot when it comes to selecting the perfect pillow for you.  In general, people fall into one of three categories of sleeper: back sleepers, side sleepers and stomach sleepers.

  • Back sleepers – back sleepers benefit from a pillow that is flat and medium-firm.  This will help to keep your head and neck aligned, thereby reducing your risk of developing neck pain.
  • Side sleepers – the best pillow for a side sleeper is generally firm and fairly thick.  Try to select a product that is roughly as thick as the distance between your outer shoulder and your ear, as this will ensure your neck and head are still in alignment.  Side sleepers also tend to favour soft mattresses, which have more give for your hip and shoulder.  Firm pillows work best with soft mattresses.
  • Stomach sleepers – stomach sleepers may find that a soft pillow is best for them – in particular, a flat pillow.  This is because a flat pillow won’t raise your head too high, which tilts the head too far back and can sometimes result in neck pain.  Stomach sleepers are most likely to be caused aches and pains by their sleep position.  Sometimes these pains can be prevented or alleviated by putting a pillow beneath your pelvis and stomach.  Stomach sleepers are often advised to use a firm mattress, and it is suggested that soft pillows be used in conjunction with these.

Do you have allergies?

If you suffer from allergies, you’ll find that some pillows are better for your wellbeing than others.  Memory foam options are less likely to exacerbate your symptoms, since many of them are anti allergy.  Cotton, wool and alpaca also have hypoallergenic properties.  Duck and goose down, despite their many good points, are generally less suitable for this purpose.

What is your mattress tension?

Your mattress tension can impact which type of pillow you should use.  You can purchase a mattress in soft, medium or firm tension.

  • If you have a firm mattress, a soft pillow will provide the give that your mattress doesn’t, adapting to your weight appropriately for a fantastic night’s sleep.  This combination is best for stomach sleepers.
  • If you have a soft mattress, a firm pillow will provide you with much needed support for your neck and head, keeping these elements aligned to prevent back and neck pain.  This combination is ideal for side sleepers.

How to care for your pillows

Get the most from your pillows by ensuring that you are giving them the care they need.

  • Fluff up your pillows and shake them on a daily basis.  Doing this doesn’t just help to put some shape back into them – it also helps to kill any dust mites, making them more hygienic
  • Some pillow types, in particular latex and polyester, benefit from a gentle weekly wash in the washing machine.  Please note that you should always double-check the cleaning instructions before going ahead, to ensure that your pillow is suitable for washing.  Most memory foam options don’t need to be washed, but some have removable and washable covers.  If this is the case, it’s best to wash the covers for hygiene purposes.
  • It’s best to replace a pillow when it loses its shape and effectiveness.  Some have a use-by date so you can be sure whether it’s time to check on its effectiveness.  In the event that your pillows don’t have a use by date, as a rule of thumb it’s best to keep them for a maximum of 2 years.
