House Move Must-haves

The Stamp Duty holiday has been extended. For buyers lucky enough to complete before the end of June, that means great savings on your house purchase. If you haven't yet started your search, it's still good news — as the housing market gradually picks up, the hunt for your dream home can soon begin.

Just buying a house is a stressful experience, so stressful that furniture may have been the last thing on your mind before exchange. If you don't currently have much furniture, or are leaving your old furniture at a previous address, you may be in the process of working out what to buy and when.

In our home mover's survival guide, we'll give you our top five most important pieces of furniture for a new home.

Beds

A bed is the first piece of furniture you'll need for your new home. This one is obvious — after all, you have to sleep somewhere. But there's more to it than that: a bed can be a multifunctional item in a pinch, particularly when accompanied by a comfortable padded headboard. On those first few nights surrounded by boxes, you can plug in the TV and watch your favourite programmes, work from home and even eat meals. There are two options to choose from: a bed frame and mattress or a divan bed. Add drawers to a divan bed and you'll have short term storage for clothes and bedding while you wait for your other furniture to arrive.

Side tables and bedside tables

You reach over to set down your glass or mug... and there's nothing there. Side tables and bedside tables seem inconsequential, but we use them more than we realise. You'll only notice how much you need a lamp table when you're straining to set your coffee down on the floor or knocking your wine glass over with your foot. Spare your new carpets with a few simple drinks surfaces. A nest of tables provides several small surfaces in one. A side table or bedside table with drawers will provide extra storage space for gadgets and clothing.

Wardrobes and chests of drawers

Living out of cardboard boxes isn't the nicest feeling in the world. You can never find what you need, plus it makes you feel like a guest in your own home. Time to put your clothes and bedding away properly with bedroom storage furniture. Choose a combination of wardrobes and chests of drawers that suit your requirements. Alternatively, try a fitted wardrobe for a storage solution tailored to you.

TV unit

Whether we're watching movies, using streaming services or gaming, the TV is the entertainment hub of the house, so a TV unit quickly becomes important in your new home. A TV cabinet puts your TV at an appropriate height so everyone can watch in comfort. It can also provide limited storage for DVD players, games consoles and Blu-ray players. If you're hoping for a more comprehensive media storage solution, you can opt for a TV combination unit, or simply add a couple of bookcases for storing your DVDs.

Sofas

A house just doesn't feel like a home without a sofa or living room set. Sofas are the centrepieces of our living rooms — there's just no point being in there without them. Pick a sofa that will give your lounge that 'welcome home' feeling, something you find comfortable in a fabric or leather that suits your style.

Made to order sofas are well worth the wait but have a longer lead time. An in stock sofa will arrive more quickly, but there are fewer options available to choose from.
