Trending: Retro Revitalization

Trends may come and go, but right now we're having a throwback to the 1970s! The age of hippies and disco is back and we couldn’t be happier to see it filtering into our interiors.

Many trends over the past few years have been rooted to remorse and longing as it has been comforting to us during these turbulent times, so if you're tired of the all-white living room trend, you'll be excited to know that bright, bold colors are back in style. From psychedelic patterns to daring textures, our interior décor is now shifting from minimalistic and modern to the rise of maximalism.

Retro Colours

Greys, creams and whites aren’t as apparent as they once were, for 2022 it’s all about colours that make you feel good, we are seeing a revitalized energetic palette being introduced. Colours such as mustard yellows, burnt oranges and denim blues dominated '70s homes and we are turning to these bold colours once again to signify a brighter future as the pandemic comes to an end.

If you don't want to commit to a fully retro palette, consider a mustard yellow accent chair or a deep green lampshade, mixing in a few maximalist elements into your home is the perfect way to get a modern look with a retro vibe.

Psychedelic Designs

On the other hand, if you want to really channel the 70s within your interior, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! A great way to achieve this is to seek psychedelic designs with a variety of geometric shapes and repetition to create a strong blend of modern and retro.

To avoid a bold pattern taking over a space, stick with an accessory, like a rug to start with.

Layer On Texture

The 70’s was a decade defined by wall-to-wall shag carpets and knickknacks galore, however 1970s interior design also incorporated many timeless elements that are resurfacing within our homes today. Materials such as boucle, corduroy and quilting, along with some shaggy accent pieces is a great way to recreate a more subtle modern adaptation of a retro look.

From Rattan To Wicker

Rattan and wicker were key to defining the 70’s classic boho vibe and is now an essential aspect of recreating a 70’s inspired home. With its classic relaxed aesthetic, you could opt for an accent piece such as a chair or coffee table, or go big and fill your entire room with rattan and wicker.  Rattan and wicker furniture is a good way to start incorporating a retro vibe within your home as it is trendy without feeling unapproachable, there is so many options and no room for going wrong.

Swap In Retro Lighting

Replacing modern lighting with a retro inspired statement piece is a simple yet effective swap that adds to the 70’s styling without overwhelming a room. It's even more impactful if the lighting contrasts with the existing style of the space. Look for fixtures with a gloss finish or fearless geometric silhouettes, this could be in the form of domed shaped mushroom lamp.
