There are two different kinds of divans available: platform top divans and sprung edge divans.
Platform tops are cheap divan beds with a harder top for a firmer feel. They work well with latex and memory foam mattresses.
By contrast, a sprung edge divan, the more traditional option, is made up of pocket springs or coil springs. The springs cushion the mattress and also reduce wear and tear, extending the life of the mattress.
Divan beds and divan bases are available for purchase. A divan base is an upholstered base for your bed and does not include a mattress. A divan bed or divan set is a divan base with a mattress.
A divan base is the better option if you would like to keep your existing mattress and replace the divan or bedframe only, or if there’s a specific mattress you would like that would not come as part of the divan set.
If you would like to buy a bed and mattress together, you can do so by purchasing a divan bed. This is more convenient and less time-consuming than shopping for a mattress and base separately.
Please note that our divan beds and bases do not come with a headboard as standard. This means you are free to choose the right base and mattress for your requirements before completing the look with the headboard of your choice.
Divan beds have many advantages when compared with bed frames. Firstly, they are good for saving space. Bed frames have to be wider than the mattress so that the bedposts do not cause an obstruction. With a divan bed, the base and mattress are the same length and width, making them a good choice for compact living.
In the case of a divan set, you can buy your divan and mattress together. Not only does this save time, it also means you can be confident that your mattress and divan base are proportioned correctly.
With so many colours and fabrics available, you can achieve many different looks with a divan bed, tailoring it to suit any décor and style. Velvets are ideal for glamorous contemporary classic bedrooms, while a neutral colour or grey divan bed will work across many colour schemes. Headboards also come in numerous styles, so you can purchase your divan bed or base, then match it with the perfect headboard for your look.
You can also purchase divan beds with storage to reduce bedroom clutter. Often, divans can be purchased with varying numbers of drawers, generally 2 or 4, or with the option of continental drawers.
Drawers are a great form of storage for items you use more often, since you can simply open a drawer to access everything you need. To maximise the life of your drawers and divan bed base, it’s best to double-check the maximum weight for your drawers to avoid overloading them.
When deciding on your storage options, take care to consider the other furniture in the room.
Make sure there is room to open the drawers out, too. If the room is too small to achieve this comfortably, and the items you are storing are only for occasional use, you can purchase an ottoman divan which opens upwards or sideways rather than outwards.
