Why should you consider framed wall art?

Framed wall art is a fine addition to the lounge for a variety of reasons, all of which will enhance the look of your room.

First of all, you can use a picture to fill wall space, giving the room a sense of dimension and making it feel less bare.

You can also select art that has personal meaning to you, or which expresses your individual style.

In addition, you can colour co-ordinate your art so that it perfectly suits the space.  You can choose art that will blend with your existing colour scheme and home décor or select something that will accent it using a complementary colour.  This helps to complete the look of the room.

Furthermore, art can be used to draw the eye, adding interest to the room and providing a handy conversation piece for visitors.

Finally, you can match your art’s style to the style of your room, boosting the ambience of the space and providing a stronger sense of identity.

What size framed prints are available?

Framed prints can be purchased in a range of different sizes to suit the needs of your room.  You can purchase small, medium and large framed art prints, which have unique advantages and uses within the home.

Small framed prints

Small framed prints are a good choice for populating a stark hallway, landing or staircase, adding a splash of colour.  They can alternatively be used in a bathroom or bedroom.

Medium sized framed wall art

If you would rather not have one big picture in your living room, you can always opt for one or two medium sized prints, as these don’t dominate the space in the same way.  Medium sized prints may also be an alternative for a small living room, where you don’t quite have room for large print.

Large framed artwork

Large framed artwork is useful for large rooms, such as an expansive living room or kitchen diner.  Be aware that by choosing a large picture, you are selecting a focal point for the room.  With large prints in particular, it is advisable to measure the wall space you have available, so that you’re confident the space is big enough and that the print is appropriate to the size of the room.

What rooms are good to have framed wall prints?

There are no hard and fast rules for where you should place your art – the whole point of having it is to let your style and self-expression shine through!  However, the room in which you intend the art to be situated and your existing furniture and décor may impact your decision.

Dining room or kitchen space

Large or open plan spaces such as a dining room or kitchen diner are the perfect setting for large framed wall art.  A large piece of art can give you a feature wall which serves as a focal point for your room.

If your style is modern and minimalist, you can use this one large item to fill up a blank wall and make the room feel less empty.  You may want to select a dramatic, metallic and/or brightly coloured abstract piece that attracts attention, or you might want something more subdued, such as a landscape or a black and white photo print, that won’t overwhelm existing furnishings.

Be aware that if you already have a centrepiece for your room, or a lot of attention-grabbing furniture, a large print might detract from these items and add yet more style information for guests to take in.

Living room

The living room is the place where you want to feel most at home in the evenings and at weekends, but it’s also where you’ll host visitors.  As such, living room décor is a push-pull between the image you want to show the world and the real you.

This makes it the perfect place for a well-placed piece of wall art, which can show guests a stylish snippet of your personal taste and identity.  As such, living room wall art can include a whole range of different styles.

Modern style lounges tend to benefit from abstract art or black and white framed photo prints.  Abstract art provides a splash of colour to complement existing furnishings or adds more colour to the room.  On the other hand, a black and white photo will add to a monochrome colour scheme, and works especially well with white walls.

Alternatively, prints of classic artwork and quaint landscapes are perfect for traditional style homes or farmhouse abodes.  Display your love for a classic painter or use pictures of local or countryside scenery to boost the country style ambience of your home.

Bedroom

As the bedroom is a more private area of the home, you can afford to be more sentimental here with the artwork you choose.  However, please note that bedroom framed art tends to be smaller than in other rooms in the house, so that it doesn’t prevent you from winding down before bed.  For the same reason, prints may feature pastel colours or be simpler in design.  In addition, bedrooms tend to have many items of larger furniture against the walls, including headboards, wardrobes and chests of drawers, reducing the space available for a larger print.

You can match your bedroom wall art to your colour scheme to tie the whole room together under one consistent tone.  This can be achieved by matching the colours of your artwork to your curtains, carpets and bedding.  You can also use framed wall art that contrasts with your walls in order to draw attention.

Finally, don’t forget that your frame is part of your art print, too.  Select the perfect frame colour to suit your furnishings.

What else should you consider when choosing wall art?

There are various extra features available which will really help your art prints to stand out from the crowd.

  • Metallic wiring and gold foil embellishments add a touch of glamour and reflect the light, drawing attention towards them.  These features are used sparingly, adding plenty of flair and interest to the piece without making it too garish.
  • Fine art paper is higher quality than average.  This means that prints made using fine art paper look even more beautiful and are likely to last longer without cracking or fading.  If you would like a high quality piece with lots of longevity, a print produced on fine art paper is most certainly the way to go.
  • Parchment paper is used to give a piece of art a vintage edge.  These prints are ideal for more bohemian style homes.  As the paper itself is beautiful, it can also be used for more simplistic designs to give them more depth.
