Bar Stools

A bar stool turns a kitchen island or breakfast bar into somewhere to eat, work or chat while someone cooks. Our range includes bar and counter height stools, swivel and height-adjustable designs, from Kartell, Bontempi, ercol, Richmond Interiors and more.

Bar height or counter height?

The height of the counter decides the stool. Measure from the floor to the underside of the worktop, and choose a seat that leaves roughly 25 to 30cm of space for your legs. Counter stools suit most kitchen islands and worktops, and taller bar stools suit higher bars. Several designs come in both heights, such as the Kartell Masters stool in H.65 and H.75, and the ercol Lara as a bar stool and a counter stool. Check the seat height on the product page.

Adjustable and swivel stools

A gas lift stool raises and lowers, which helps if it will be used at different counters or by people of different heights. A swivel stool is easier to get on and off, especially where there is little space behind it. Bontempi's Clara and Kuga and the Fucino are available with these features.

Backs and footrests

A backless stool tucks fully under the counter and suits a small kitchen. A stool with a back is more comfortable for longer sits. A footrest matters more than people expect, because at this height your feet will not reach the floor.

How many will fit?

As a guide, allow about 60cm of counter for each stool, measured from the centre of one seat to the next. Wider stools, and stools with arms, need more.

Seat materials

Faux leather wipes clean, which helps in a kitchen. Fabric and velvet are softer to sit on. Leather stools are available, and wooden stools in oak and ash come with or without a seat pad.
