Chest of Drawers & Cupboards: Page 2

A chest of drawers is the everyday storage in most bedrooms, and its top often does a second job as a dressing table or a place for a lamp. Our range includes wide chests, tall chests and tallboys, from ercol, Rauch, Alf Italia and more, in oak, painted and high gloss finishes.

Wide or tall?

A wide chest is usually lower and gives you a larger top, which suits a mirror or a lamp. A tall chest or tallboy fits more drawers into less floor space, so it suits a smaller room or the space beside a wardrobe.

What the names mean

Many chests are described by their drawer layout. A 2 over 3 chest has two smaller drawers above three larger ones, and a 3 over 4 has three above four. The small top drawers suit socks, jewellery and accessories, and the deeper drawers below suit jumpers and spare bedding.

Check the space in front

Drawers need room to open fully, and you need room to stand in front of them. Check the depth on the product page and allow for it, particularly at the end of a bed or beside a door.

Drawers that last

Look at how the drawers are made. Dovetail joints are a traditional sign of solid construction, and full extension runners let a drawer open all the way, so you can reach the back. The Rauch Box chests, for example, have full extension runners and self-closing drawers.

Fix tall chests to the wall

A tall chest should be fixed to the wall so that it cannot tip, especially in a home with children. Check whether fixings are supplied, and use ones that suit your type of wall.

Matching bedroom furniture

Most of our chests belong to a bedroom range, so you can match other pieces in the room. Fairfax, Hemingford, Harbour and Brenton are examples, alongside ercol's Bosco, Teramo and Rimini. See also our bedside tables and wardrobes, and our full range of beds.
