Natural Materials

Vispring carefully selects natural materials for their softness, breathability and resilience. Each filling is hand-laid over the springs to create a naturally comfortable and insulating sleep surface.

From British wool and silk to cotton, bamboo, horsetail and cashmere, these materials work together to help regulate temperature and create a comfortable sleeping environment.

Silk

A naturally strong and luxurious fibre, silk offers exceptional softness while helping to regulate body temperature.

Horsetail

Sourced from Austria and South America, hand-teased horsetail fibres act like tiny springs, adding resilience, bounce and breathability.

Wool

Naturally breathable, hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating, wool helps keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Cotton

Fine long-fibre cotton offers softness, strength and breathability, helping to create comfortable sleep in every season.

Vicuna

One of the world's rarest natural fibres, vicuña is exceptionally soft, lightweight and naturally hypoallergenic.

Cashmere

Exceptionally soft and lightweight, responsibly sourced cashmere adds natural warmth and a luxurious layer of comfort.

Mohair

Responsibly sourced from South Africa, mohair is naturally soft and elastic, bringing luxurious comfort and resilience to the mattress.

Bamboo

British Craftsmanship

British Craftsmanship

Since 1901, Vispring has refined the art of handmade mattress making. Today, more than 200 skilled craftspeople work in the Plymouth workshop, many bringing decades of experience to every mattress.

Each mattress is carefully assembled by hand, from its pocket springs and natural fillings to its hand-tufted surface and side-stitched borders. It is a meticulous process where skill, experience and attention to detail come together to create exceptional comfort.

Hand Nested Pocket Springs

At the heart of every Vispring mattress are individually nested Calico Cotton pocket springs, arranged in a honeycomb formation. Each spring responds independently to movement, helping the mattress conform naturally to the body while providing balanced support.

Hand Side Stitching

The borders of every mattress are carefully hand-side-stitched using natural twine. Taking hours to complete, this traditional technique strengthens the mattress edge and helps preserve its shape and comfort for years to come.

The Vispring Story

Vispring's story began in 1901, when English engineer James Marshall was inspired by a simple desire to create a more comfortable night's sleep for his wife. His solution was revolutionary: a mattress made with individually pocketed springs, each wrapped by hand and designed to respond independently to the sleeper.

The idea became known as the Marshall Mattress, laying the foundations for what would become Vispring. Its unique construction offered a level of comfort and support unlike anything available at the time.

Over the decades, Vispring continued to refine the art of handmade mattress making, bringing together innovative spring technology with the finest natural materials. In 1924, the company established its workshop in Plymouth, where its mattresses are still handcrafted today.

More than 120 years later, the spirit behind that original idea remains at the heart of Vispring. Skilled craftspeople continue to hand-make every mattress to order, combining generations of knowledge with carefully selected natural materials and meticulous attention to detail.er.
