An extending dining table stays compact for everyday meals and opens out when you have guests. Our range runs from a round table that extends from 110cm to 140cm up to one that opens from 2 metres to 3 metres, with designs from ercol, Bontempi, Venjakob and more.
How many people do you need to seat?
As a rough guide, allow about 60cm of table edge for each person. Think about the number you seat most days, then the largest number you want to seat a few times a year. The closed size should suit the first and the open size the second. Both sizes are given on the product page, and often in the product name.
How the table extends
Tables extend in different ways. A butterfly leaf is hinged, folds in half and stores inside the table, so there is nothing to put away. On other tables the leaf is a separate piece that is fitted when you need it. Check the product page to see how the table opens, whether the leaf is included and where it is kept.
Will it fit when it is open?
Measure the room for the table at its full size, not just closed. Leave about 90cm between the table edge and the wall or the next piece of furniture, so people can pull out a chair and walk behind it. Measure the route into the house too: front door, hallway and any tight turns.
Shape and legs
Alongside rectangular tables, we have round extending tables. Look at where the legs are. A pedestal or central base leaves the corners free, which makes it easier to fit an extra chair. Legs at the corners can get in the way of the end seats when the table is closed.
Table tops
Our extending tables include oak tops and ceramic tops. Ceramic is a hard surface that wipes clean easily. Oak shows its grain and can be marked by heat and water, so use mats and coasters.
