What is a wing chair?

A wingback armchair is a chair with two sections on either side known as wings, which can stretch all the way down to the arm rest.  These wing sections are how this classic chair got its name.

Wing chairs are a longstanding form of chair, originally appearing as early as the 1600s, and were traditionally placed in front of the fireplace.  Their wings were used to fend off the draught in old houses and to protect the skin from the heat of the fire.  This association has led to the chairs being known as fireside chairs.

Why should you choose a wing chair?

Wingback chairs have many benefits worthy of consideration.

Their iconic design is highly impactful and looks stunning in any traditional style home.

Don’t presume it can only be used in traditional homes, however – the classic wing back chair has become a surprisingly versatile design.  Classic contemporary styling in particular has transformed the wing chair to blend beautifully with modern furnishings.  These chairs often incorporate daring shapes and dramatic sweeping curves, using deep or bright colours to truly pop.

Practical but attractive, wing chairs are more than just seating.  They are also a form of decoration which looks fantastic in any corner of the house.  Stunning as an accent chair or a standalone piece, a wing chair has no obligation to conform to the rest of your sofa set and adds interest to the living room as a result.

Traditional chairs tend towards classic features like turned legs and scroll arms.  Intricate detail work like button backs and studwork are also common finds on these items.

Classic contemporary models may also use these features to add style or glamour, while others escape these features entirely for a more shapely modern style.  Such styles may feature tapered legs and a simpler arm.

Wing chairs also provide plenty of support.  A high back supports the back, while the arms provide leverage for getting in and out of the chair, great features for those who are less mobile.  A nod to its heritage, the chair will keep draughts at bay even in this day and age, and its shape will help you to stay snug and comfortable all year round.

A multipurpose addition to the home, wing back chairs can be used in many different rooms of the house besides the living room.

  • Hallways and landings are a great place to add a splash of design flair.  They also provide a place to put on shoes when leaving the house.
  • The chairs can also wow guests in a spare room, doubling up as a useful place for setting down a bag or hanging clothes.  A fabric version can be used to complement a fabric divan bed.
  • A library, office or study can be given a touch of class with a leather wing chair, impressing visitors and providing a comfortable place to read.
  • A wing chair can be added to any large room to help to fill the space.  This idea is great for large dining rooms, bedrooms and foyers.
  • Given its draft-preventing properties, the wing chair can also be a good choice in a conservatory or any other room which struggles to retain heat.  This can include large rooms with high ceilings or rooms that don’t see much sunlight.

Which fabrics are wing chairs available in?

Wing backed chairs can come in a whole host of different fabrics to suit a broad range of furnishings.

Woven fabric wing chair

A woven fabric wing chair is cosier and more breathable than leather alternatives, making it a very comfortable place to sit and relax.  As they are made from fabric, the chairs can be found in all manner of colours, textures, styles and patterns, meaning they can be coordinated with many different colour schemes.  This makes them an excellent addition to a lounge or spare bedroom.

If retaining heat or keeping cool is a priority for your wing chair, woven fabric upholstery is worthy of consideration, since fabrics like wool will be cooler in the summer and warmer during the winter.

Woven fabric chairs are particularly popular in checked fabrics.  Their distinctive pattern and multiple colours add interest to the room.

Leather wing chair

The leather wing chair is the most traditional style of wing chair, and is especially popular in classic brown leather.  Aniline and semi-aniline leathers will give a wing chair more authenticity and a truly one-of-a-kind appearance, while top grain leathers are easier to clean.  The chairs may include a button back and turned legs for added design appeal.

Leather wing chairs make a fantastic impression in an office, study or library, and are a welcome addition to a traditional style living room or dining room.

In classic contemporary styles, they can be found in a wider variety of colours to better match your décor, and serve as contrast to a fabric sofa set.

Velvet wing chair

Velvet wing chairs are tactile and very comfortable.  The feel and look of the velvet upholstery adds a touch of luxury and vintage glamour to any space, and may be enhanced by studding detail or a button back.  Classic contemporary options will favour dramatic, rich and fashionable colours such as turmeric, deep blues and forest greens.  These chairs work well as accent furniture to complement the rest of your sofa set.

Fabric and leather wing chair

A fabric and leather wing chair fuses the classic look of leather with the comfortable qualities of fabric, resulting in a twist on traditional styling.  The fabric and scatters contrast with the leather body for a unique blend of textures and styles.  These chairs can be found in traditional and contemporary classic collections.
